Specialist Design Project- Floor Plan Ideas

Today I decided by the end of the day I wanted to have an initial idea of what I wanted my floor plan to look like. I felt that I had enough ideas to start planning out my design, and as I struggle more with the technical side of Interior Design, I felt that I should get a head start!

Using the AutoCAD templates provided, I edited the floor plan and a side elevation to the layout I had in mind, and then converted them both into a single PDF. I then printed off 3 copies to be able to develop my design multiple times. I knew from the beginning that I wanted my co-working space to be zoned for different working styles, yet still overall appear as an open planned space.

When drawing my first design, I decided to have a more private working space towards the back of the building, therefore reducing the likeliness of disruptions. I also designed a bespoke living plant wall which would be fitted in the back of the building, along with wall mounted sound diffusers. I then had a few tables for more communal working areas just outside, which would allow the natural light to shine directly through from the windows. I also had a group of hanging pods by the window for either recreational use or more laid back work. Next to the pods I have a relaxation zone, where members can play pool and take a break from the stress of work. I hadn't quite figured out yet what my outdoor layout would be, but I knew I wanted to combine work spaces with a 'summer paradise.'

The second idea I drew was very similar to the layout of the first, however I felt that a few sections could be improved. The desks in the private working space I felt should be parallel to one another, to allow for a smoother circulation flow when entering the area. I also considered having the communal work desks by the front of the building to allow them more natural light whilst they're working, while having the hanging pods towards the back, hanging between the built-in arches. I also figured out a layout design for my terraced area, having a more dedicated workspace towards the front of the building, while having sun loungers/daybeds by the arches of the building, to allow for more shade.

For my final idea, I decided to evaluate the other two development plans I had already drawn and try and combine the elements I liked best from each one to create a more 'final' plan. I decided that I preferred having the communal work area towards the back of the building, and provided more tables to work on. The front of the building is better suited as a recreational area, with hanging pods of various heights and the pool table in place. Outdoors, I have drawn two different locations for work spaces. Both areas have a combination of working desks and spaces to relax and relieve stress.

Overall I'm pleased with my floor plans, and I believe my third plan is the one that I will be drawing up in AutoCAD for my final design. I still need to consider my Ground Floor entrance space and adding a lift for disabled access, however I feel that my development sketches have helped me get a more secure idea of what my final space is going to look like.
