Specialist Design Project- Hanging Pods

When I started considering what furniture to put in my co-working space, I instantly knew I wanted to incorporate hanging chairs. As infants, we are placed in 'swinging chairs' to help us relax and calm us down; I felt that as adults we should be able to have furniture to stimulate the same emotions in order to fully de-stress.

I initially googled photos of traditional hanging chairs to give myself an idea of the different styles that were already available on manufacturer websites, however I felt I wanted to make this design my own, and create my own style based off my favourite elements of the chairs I liked. I sketched out a few different versions of various designs I liked, trying out different materials as well as different suspensions. I felt the ones I liked most were the woven texture one and the design with the tangled metal frame. However the chair had to fit my biophilic concept perfectly, therefore I chose the initial woven design.

Once I had decided on my final design idea, I drew up my design from scratch in AutoCAD. I struggled with trying to develop some of the elevations, particularly the floor plan as I wanted to make sure I didn't make any technical mistakes with my drawing! I also added hatching to my design so the woven texture would be displayed on my final floor plans and elevations. When I was satisfied with my final designs I exported the file and rendered it properly in photoshop, adding in real materials as well as cushions for inside the pod.

Overall I was extremely pleased with the final outcome of my pods, and although it took most of the day to complete, the finished design is exactly what I envisioned for my

Work of Eden.
